The Revolution of 1905 began in Saint Petersburg and spread rapidly into the provinces. With the start of World War I, the name Saint Petersburg was perceived to be too German, so on August 18 (31), 1914 by the order of Nicholas II the capital was renamed Petrograd (Slavic for 'Petersburg'),.[18] Prefix 'Saint' was rarely used in Russian common speech, however this act officially changed the eponym of the city: after Saint Peter, Peter the Great, the founder of the capital, became its 'patron'.

On January 26, 1924, three days after Lenin's death, Petrograd was renamed Leningrad. For decades Leningrad was glorified by the Soviet propaganda as "the cradle of the revolution" and "the city of three revolutions"; many spots related to Lenin and the revolutions, such as the cruiser Aurora, were carefully preserved.[citation needed] Many streets and other toponyms were renamed accordingly.
